Patricia Curry - Headed to the sectionals - The Indian Lake / Long Lake Lady Orange varsity basketball team clinched the Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference Southern Division Championship last week. The Lady Orange is made up of (front, from left) Megan Pickering, Jill Miller, Ronya Hamdan, Morgan King, Shannon Farrell, Chelsea Walters and Emily Waters and (back) Kaylyn Bennett, Abigail Darling, Morgan Hinckley, Meg Smith, Sydney Hinckley, Prudence Deshane, Jessica Bain and Shanika Burch. Preliminary play will be Feb. 21, quarter-finals Feb. 24, semi-finals Feb. 28 and finals March 2 at SUNY Plattsburgh starting at 4 p.m.

The Indian Lake / Long Lake Lady Orange clinched the Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference Southern Division Championship with an easy win in North Creek last week, while both of the county’s boys’ teams picked up a win.

GIRLS

IL/LL 32, M/N 26

The 14th ranked IL/LL girls faced Minerva / Newcomb in Olmstedville Feb. 6, outscoring the opposition in three of the four periods to improve its record to 13-2.

Meg Smith led IL/LL with 12 points. Morgan Hinckley contributed nine, while Sydney Hinckley worked the boards for nine rebounds. Shannon Farrell chipped in with four steals.

IL/LL: Farrell 2-0-4, King 2-0-4, M. Hinckley 3-2-8, Bain 0-2-2, S. Hinckley 1-0-2, Smith 5-2-12, Hamden 0-0-0. Totals 13-6-32.

M/N: Bennett 0-0-0, Winslow 4-0-8, Yandon 1-0-2, McNally 2-5-9, Miller 0-0-0, Hammond 1-2-4 Totals 9-6-26.

The Lady Orange clinched the Southern Division Championship Feb. 9, outscoring Johnsburg throughout. Jessica Bain recorded seven rebounds, four assists and three steals along with a career high 18 points to lead IL/LL. Morgan Hinckley contributed nine points and eight rebounds.

Wells traveled to Newcomb for a Southern Division game Feb. 9. Karli Tomlison netted 24 points for The Lady Indians but it wasn’t enough to hold off M/N. Desi Gallup contributed nine points in the loss.

M/N: Bennett 1-0-2, Winslow 4-0-8, Bolan 1-0-2, Yandon 6-6-18, McNally 7-9-23, Miller 2-0-4, Hammond 0-1-1, Mather 0-0-0, Martin 0-0-0. Totals 21-16-58.

The IL/LL boys trekked up to Lake Placid Feb. 6. The Orange got off to a great start with a 15-2 first quarter. The host Bombers then went on a run outscoring IL/LL in the final three quarters. Matt Moore was high scorer for IL/LL with 13 points.

Lake Placid: Bickford 1-1-3, J. Stephenson 7-1-18, Morrison 1-1-3, Porter 0-1-1, Daniels 7-4-18. Totals 16-8-0.

IL/LL: Moore 4-3-13, Farrell 4-0-8, Sandiford 2-0-5, Seaman 3-1-8. Totals 13-4-34.

WELLS 40, IL/LL 34

The IL/LL boys traveled south Feb. 8 to face Wells. Jake Early led the Indians to the win, recording a double-double with 24 points and 15 rebounds. The Indians improved their record to 4-8. Matt Moore and Curtis Seaman were top scorers for IL/LL with nine points each.

Wells: Earley 10-4-24, McKenzie 1-0-3, Brennan 1-0-2, Elmendorf 0-1-1, Weaver 2-0-4, Hayes 2-1-5, Hoffman 0-1-1. Totals 16-7-40.

IL/LL 45, J’BURG 39

The IL/LL boys avenged an early season loss to Johnsburg Feb. 10 in Indian Lake. The key was outstanding defense on Johnsburg’s Taylor Ordway. In their previous match Ordway scored 30 points. In this game he was held to 17.

Balanced scoring for IL/LL also helped The Orange obtain its second league win of the season. Colin Farrell and Henry Sandiford each scored 14 points, while Matt Moore supplied 11.

Johnsburg: Sears 0-0-0, Smith 0-0-0, Prouty 1-0-2, Ordway 6-1-17, Scott 3-0-6, Watson 1-0-2, Washburn 3-2-9, Gahan 1-0-2, Moore 0-1-1. Totals 15-4-39.

Wells hosted M/N Friday. Two Wells players recorded double-doubles in the win. Jake Early recorded his second double-double of the week with 25 points and 14 rebounds, while Ben Brenan netted 13 points and hauled down 19 rebounds. Caleb Hayes contributed 13 points.
