In addition to playing non-league games last week, area high school basketball teams concluded the Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference (MVAC) regular season. Also, the Indian Lake / Long Lake girls, who are MVAC Division III Champions, were recognized by the New York State Sportswriters Association with a 17th place ranking in the Class D poll.

GIRLS VARSITY

MAYFIELD 47, WELLS 34

Monday, Feb. 7, the Wells Lady Indians traveled to Mayfield for a non-league game. The first half was competitive with the hosts holding a slim advantage at 20-15 at halftime. In the second and third quarters, Mayfield opened up the lead, outscoring Wells 27-19 to win the game at 47-34.

Desiree Gallup was high scorer for Wells with 11 points. Sam Bartholf and Amanda Vrooman each chipped in with eight.

IL/LL 41 CROWN PT. 19

The Indian Lake / Long Lake girls traveled to Crown Point Wednesday, Feb. 9. They got off to slow start, leading the host Panthers by only three after the first eight minutes of play. In the second quarter, they doubled Crown Point’s score 8-4, to be up by seven at halftime. After the break, The Orange took control of the game, outscoring The Panthers 22-7 in the second half to win 41-19.

Carli Reynolds led IL/LL with 16 points, nine rebounds, five steals and five assists. Murphy Farrell had 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.

IL/LL: Farrell 6-0-12, Bain 0-0-0, Pierson 2-0-4, Reynolds 5-5-16, Pine 4-0-8, M. Hinckley 0-1-1, Smith 0-0-0. Totals: 17-6-41.

WELLS 62, KEENE 17

The girls’ team from Wells enjoyed an easy win over Keene Wednesday. The Lady Indians jumped out to a 27-4 first quarter lead and continued their dominance the remainder of the game to win 62-17.

Three Wells players scored in double figures. Amanda Vrooman led with 19 points, Sam Bartholf netted 14 and Desiree Gallup contributed 12. Bartholf also recorded eight rebounds, five steals and four assists while Gallup had eight steals and five assists.

Keene: Kawanko 1-0-2, Dumas 1-0-3, Holbrook 5-2-12. Totals 7-2-17.

Friday, Feb. 11, the IL/LL girls faced Section X Tupper Lake in a non-league game. The host Lumberjacks led 15-11 after the first quarter, but IL/LL held the lead in all subsequent quarters to win 49-41.

Carli Reynolds recorded 27 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Melanie Pierson tallied eight points, eight rebounds and two steals. Allison Pine hauled in eight rebounds in the win.

BOYS VARSITY

WELLS 77, WESTPORT 69

The Wells boys’ team was in action Tuesday, Feb. 8, hosting the Westport Eagles. The Indians held a comfortable 44-34 lead at halftime. Westport wasn’t ready to give in and rallied to outscore Wells 24-19 in the third quarter. However, Wells maintained the lead at 63-58 heading into final stanza and went on to acquire the 77-69 win.

Jake Early had a hot shooting hand, recording a game-high 38 points to lead his team. Ryan Woodard and Josh Fish contributed 14 and 11 points respectively.

Wells: Earley 12-14-38, Hayes 2-0-5, Woodward 6-1-14, Raymond 2-0-5, Fish 5-0-11, Jennings 2-0-4, Totals 29-16-77.

Westport: Russell 8-3-19, Quaglietta 4-0-8, Sayward 0-1-1, Frum 2-0-4, Marwicca 1-0-2, Davis 12-3-27, Adams 4-0-8 Totals 31-7-69.

SCHROON LK 76, IL/LL 36

The IL/LL boys had a tough go of it Friday, Feb. 11, when they faced a hot Schroon Lake team. The Wildcats shared the scoring among 11 players in the lopsided 76-36 win. Hank Evatt was high scorer for IL/LL with 15 points.

IL/LL: Moore 4-1-10, Jerem 0-0-0, Farrell 0-2-2, Wells 0-0-0, Douglas 0-0-0, Evatt 6-1-15, Torrens 0-0-0, Gagnier 0-0-0, Hart 0-0-0, Rusch 3-3-9. Totals 13-7-36.

CROWN PT 69, WELLS 35

In Crown Point Friday, the Wells Indians took an early 13-8 lead before host Panthers created havoc with their aggressive full court press. In the second quarter, The Indians couldn’t get their offense running as Crown Point outscored them 27-8 on their way to the 69-35 win.

John Fish led the Wells scoring with 14 points, while Ryan Woodward chipped in 12.

Wells: Early 2-1-5, Hayes 1-0-2, Woodward 4-3-12, Dejong 0-0-0, Raymond 0-2-2, Jennings 0-0-0, Fish 7-0-14, Longenecker 0-0-0. Totals 14-6-35.

COMING UP

Friday, Feb. 18, Johnsburg will host the MVAC Champion-ship game for both boys and girls. The boys’ game will be played at 5 p.m. followed by the girls’ game at 6:30 p.m.

As of press time, the boys’ teams had not been determined. For the girls, Division III champions IL/LL will face the winner of the Division I and II playoff game between Schroon Lake and Westport.
