Wednesday, February 20, 2013 - Updated: 8:34 AM

INDIAN LAKE - Looking for some good old-fashioned North Country fun in the great outdoors? Sign up for the 4th Annual “Be A Donor” Snow Shoe Softball Tournament to benefit the National Kidney Foundation.

It will be held Saturday, Feb. 23, starting at 1 p.m. at the Benton Little League Ball Field here.

Chairwoman Elizabeth “Liz” Cannan has worked diligently over the years to raise awareness and money for the National Kidney Foundation within the Town of Indian Lake.

The registration fee is $10 per player or $100 per team with a maximum of 10 players per team. Registration includes a barbecue lunch. Participants can either join an existing team or can organize their own.

There are several registration options: email to nakoma144@hotmail.com; the Facebook page at “B.A.D. beadonor,” contact Cannan by telephone at (518) 648-5863; or register the day of the event between 10 and 11 a.m. Snowshoes may be borrowed.

Stop by Indian Lake Restaurant at 5 p.m. for the award ceremony and Chinese auction. To round out the event, DJ Krankin Ken will entertain at the restaurant beginning at 9 p.m.

Cannan, who suffers from polycystic kidney disease, a genetic disorder characterized by numerous cysts in the kidneys, has been on a kidney donation list for several years. She recently received the good news that a donor has been found.

Now, with the transplant in the works, there will be a fundraiser in addition to the one for the National Kidney Foundation at the tournament, to help with the costs that will be incurred by the operation.

There are 244 kidney transplant centers in the United States. Albany Medical Center is the local transplant center.
