The 2011-12 high school basketball regular season came to a close last week. The final league games were played with the two county boys’ teams going head to head.

GIRLS

WELLS 34, KEENE 31

Balanced scoring by Wells resulted in a victory for The Lady Indians in Keene Wednesday, Feb. 15. Keene held a slight advantage at 8-6 after the first quarter. Wells took the second quarter 13-10 to head into halftime leading 19-18. The third quarter didn’t produce much offense, with Keene outscoring Wells 4-3. The Lady Indians surged in the fourth quarter to acquire the win.

Desi Gallup and Sam Zemken each scored 10 points, while Karli Tomlinson chipped in with eight.

Wells: Woodward 1-1-4, Speece 0-1-1, Tomlinson 4-0-8, Gallup 5-0-10, Zemken 4-2-10, Vrooman 0-1-1, Michienzi 0-0-0, Page 0-0-0, Simon 0-0-0. Totals 14-5-34.

IL/LL 50, WELLS 25

The county girls’ teams went head to head Friday in Wells to finish their regular season. IL/LL currently ranked 13th among New York State Class D teams, outscored Wells 24-12 in the first half. After the break, Meg Smith and Jessica Bain led an Orange run, scoring 11 points in the 13-2 quarter.

IL/LL was led by Meg Smith’s 21 points and 10 rebounds. Jessica Bain had an outstanding game with 15 points, 10 assists and six rebounds. Shannon Farrell contributed 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals.

Karli Tomlinson was high scorer for Wells with 17 points.

IL/LL: Farrell 5-0-10, Waters 0-0-0, King 1-0-2, M. Hinckley 0-0-0, Bain 5-5-15, Hamden 0-0-0, Burch 0-0-0, Darling 0-0-0, Bennett 0-0-0, Smith 9-3-21. Totals 21-8-50.

BOYS

M/N 73, IL/LL 53

The Indian Lake / Long Lake boys hosted Minerva / Newcomb Monday, Feb. 13 in Indian Lake. The Orange jumped out to a 16-13 first quarter lead and held on to be tied 25-25 at halftime. The third quarter was competitive with M/N obtaining a slight three-point lead to enter the final period up 44-41. In the fourth quarter, M/N made consecutive steals late in the game and converted them into points to avert the early IL/LL lead.

Colin Farrell led IL/LL with 17 points, followed by Matt Moore’s 14 and Henry Sandiford’s 10.

The IL/LL boys traveled to Crown Point Tuesday, Feb. 14, where the host Panthers bolted out to a 19-5 first quarter lead. IL/LL made a run in the second quarter, trailing by one at the half. Crown Point bounced back in the third quarter to take a 48-19 lead on their way to victory.

Freshman Henry Sandiford led IL/LL with 15 points, while Matt Moore contributed nine.

The two county boys’ teams matched up in Indian Lake Thursday. The first half was played evenly with both teams scoring eight points in the first quarter. IL/LL took the second quarter by one point. The Orange controlled the second half, outscoring The Indians 34-18.

Colin Farrell was the lead scorer for IL/LL with 15 points. Matt Moore and Henry Sandiford each scored 14 points for The Orange. Jake Early was high scorer for Wells with 16 points.

IL/LL 40, KINGS 33

The IL/LL boys ended their season on a positive note Friday in Long Lake with a non-league win over The King’s School. The Orange outscored The Kings in three of the four quarters and tied them in the other on their way to the victory.

Matt Moore was the high scorer for IL/LL with 12 points.

At the close of the 2011-2012 regular season the overall records for area teams were IL/LL girls 14-2, IL/LL boys 5-13, Wells boys 5-9 and Wells girls 3-12.

The IL/LL girls will be competing in the Section VII Tournament. Friday they will host Crown Point at 6 p.m. in a quarterfinal round game at Indian Lake. IL/LL is the number three seed and Crown Point is the number six seed.

The semi-finals are scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 28, at AuSable Valley Central School, starting at 6 p.m.The Section VII Championship will be held at SUNY Plattsburgh Friday, March 2, at 4 p.m. Admission is charged for all sectional games.
