The Wells and Indian Lake / Long Lake boys opened up the Section VII basketball tournament Wednesday, Feb. 20, with preliminary games. Both teams picked up easy wins and advanced to the quarter-final round, where the boys’ teams fell short but the IL/LL Lady Orange prevailed to advance to the semi-final round.

WELLS 56, M/N 29

In Wells, the seventh seeded Indians hosted 10th seed Minerva / Newcomb. Wells jumped out to a 15-3 first quarter lead and was never challenged. Jake Earley led Wells with 23 points, 15 rebounds and three steals. Ben Brennan put forth another versatile game with 10 points, five assists, four steals and one block.

IL/LL 42, LK PLACID 22

Lake Placid, the 11 seed, traveled to Indian Lake to face the sixth seeded Orange. The Bombers were held scoreless in the first quarter as IL/LL took a 21-9 first half lead. IL/LL continued to dominate in the second half until part way through the third quarter, when senior Colin Farrell had to leave the game after an inadvertent elbow caused a laceration above his eye.

During Farrell’s absence Lake Placid outscored IL/LL and got within 10 heading into the fourth quarter. Farrell returned to the game, scored 10 points and kept the game out of reach for Lake Placid, giving IL/LL win. Farrell led the Orange with 21 points.

Friday, Feb. 22, all three county teams participating in the sectionals were in action. The IL/LL (#2 seed) girls hosted Westport (#7 seed), the IL/LL boys (#6 seed) traveled to Elizabethtown (#3 seed) and the Wells boys (#7 seed) traveled to Moriah (#2 seed).

MORIAH 60, WELLS 41

Moriah, which plays against Class B and C schools during the regular season schedule, controlled the quarterfinal game against Wells. The Vikings held a 32-16 halftime lead and went on to advance to the semi-finals. Jake Earley once again paced the Indians with 20 points and eight rebounds. Ben Brenan contributed nine points and 14 rebounds.

Wells: Earley 8-4-20, Hayes 0-2-2, Michienzi 1-0-3, Chicoski 2-2-6, Brenan 3-3-9, Weaver 0-1-1. Totals: 14-12-41.

Moriah: Calkins 6-1-13, Gaddor 1-0-2, Pratt 3-0-6, Shpur 3-0-6, Mero 3-2-8, Jaquish 4-2-10, Mauran 0-0-0, Belzer 0-0-0, Brassard 5-0-10, Marcott 2-1-5. Totals: 27-6-60.

E’TOWN 44 IL/LL 41

IL/LL trailed the Lions by three points after the first and second quarter and by four heading into the final period. The Indians kept battling, got hot from the three-point line and tied the game at 44 at the end of regulation. In overtime, IL/LL connected on one more three-point shot, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Lions four free throws.

Henry Sandiford was high scorer for the Orange with 16 points, followed by Curtis Seaman’s 11 and Matt Moore’s eight.

IL/LL 56, WESTPORT 32

The Lady Indians advanced to the semi-final round of sectionals with a win over the Eagles. Balanced team play was instrumental in the win. Shannon Farrell was high scorer with 20 points. She also recorded six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Abby Darling netted 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Meg Smith dropped in 12 points along with eight rebounds. Jessica Bain controlled the point with seven assists, three steals and five boards.

The Orange played third-seeded Moriah Tuesday in the semifinals, after press time. The championship game is Friday, March 1, at SUNY Plattsburgh at 4 p.m.
