All four local teams participated in the Section VII basketball tournament last week. However, Wells and the Indian Lake / Long Lake girls, who are currently ranked 15th in the New York Sportswriters Association poll, were the only teams to pick up a win. The IL/LL girls are the only local team playing in the tournament this week.

IL/LL 50, CROWN PT. 42

The eighth seeded Lady Indians opened up the action Tuesday when they hosted ninth seeded Crown Point in a preliminary game. Scott Tomlinson filled in as coach for Dayna Fisher who was unable to guide her team due to illness.

The game started with a sincere and touching moment of silence for Scott Gallup, who passed away Saturday in a motor vehicle accident. Desiree, Scott’s daughter, scored the first basket of the game, causing loud and supportive applause from the crowd.

The Lady Indians got off to narrow lead with a 13-11 first quarter. The two teams matched the first quarter score in the second period with Wells holding a 26-22 lead at halftime. The visiting Lady Panthers came out strong in the early part of the third quarter to take the lead. However, Wells held them off with a 14-4 run. In the final quarter, The Lady Indians outscored Crown Point by one point and won the game 50-42.

Amanda Vrooman led Wells with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Desiree Gallup tallied 13 points and six steals, while Karli Tomlinson contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and five steals.
