The 2013-2014 high school basketball season got underway last week with the boys and girls teams from Indian Lake / Long Lake and Wells participating in Northern Basketball League games.

IL/LL 40, J'BURG 24

Tuesday, Dec. 3, the IL/LL boys hosted the Johnsburg Jaguars in Indian Lake. The Orange followed up a close first quarter by doubling their opponent's points in the second period to hold a 17-9 halftime lead. After the break, IL/LL put the game out of reach, outscoring Johnsburg 21-8 to win their season opener 40-24.

Curtis Seaman and Henry Sandiford were the top scorers for IL/LL with 15 and 14 points respectively. Rudy Giessen had 10 rebounds and outstanding hustle throughout the game.

Johnsburg: Smith 0-6-6, Prouty 2-0-4, Berg 1-0-2, Johnson 0-0-0, Cleveland 1-0-2, Slater 2-0-4, Washburn 3-0-6. Totals 9-6-24.

The IL/LL and Johnsburg girls matched up in North Creek Wednesday, Dec. 4. The Orange followed up a seven-point halftime lead with a 17-2 third quarter to pull away from the Jaguars. Senior Shannon Farrell paced IL/LL with 16 points, six rebounds and six steals. Lily Dechene chipped in 15 points, six rebounds and three steals.

IL/LL: Wilder 0-0-0, King 2-0-5, Dumond 0-0-0, Moore 1-1-3, Farrell 7-2-16, Piraino 2-0-4, Hamdan 0-0-0, Carroll 0-0-0, Black 1-0-2, Dechene 7-1-15, Seery 2-0-4. Totals 22-4-49.

KEENE 68, WELLS 18

The Lady Indians of Wells were also in action Wednesday, Dec. 4, hosting Keene. The Beavers controlled the game throughout, capturing a 68-18 league win.

Wells was led by Kaeli Brenan with nine points, two steals and two assists. Chelsea Simons and Breanna Mayer each had five rebounds.

Keene: Jonette 4, Gagliardi 0, Bruha 2, Whitney 20, Peduzzi 11, Smith 5, Garcia 0, Ta. Geiger 16, Gifford 0, Tu. Geiger 10. Totals: 68.

Wells: Mayer 3, Brown 0, Brenan 9, Simons 1, Kennedy 0, Darling 2, Foster 3. Totals: 18.

IL/LL 64, CROWN PT. 57

The Crown Point Panthers traveled to Long Lake Thursday, Dec. 5, to face IL/LL boys' team. Although The Orange jumped out to a 21-12 first quarter lead, the Panthers made the game competitive, outscoring IL/LL 33-29 in the middle two periods. IL/LL connected on foul shots in the fourth quarter to hang onto the lead and get the 64-57 win.

Curtis Seaman was the hot hand for The Orange, recording a team-high 26 points. Henry Sandiford recorded 16 points.

Wells boys traveled to Keene Thursday, Dec. 5. The host Beavers held Wells scoreless in the second quarter for a 33-15 halftime lead. The Indians were competitive in the final two quarters, but couldn't overcome the early deficit. Seth Weaver led Wells with 17 points.

Wells: Chicoski 5-2-15, Weaver 6-5-17, Taylor 1-0-3, Foster 1-0-2, Brenan 0-0-0, Michenzi 2-0-5. Totals: 15-7-42.

Keene: Summo 3-0-6, Brown 7-0-19, Warner 3-1-8, Dumas 2-3-7, Holmes 0-0-0, Haberle 0-0-0, Venner 12-1-26, Hall 0-0-0, Ko 0-0-0, Haverlick 0-0-0. Totals: 27-5-66.

CROWN PT. 50, IL/LL 41

The opening week of play ended Friday with the IL/LL girls playing at Crown Point. The teams played even in the first two quarters with The Panthers holding a slim one-point lead at halftime. Following the break, Crown Point doubled IL/LL's points, ending the period with a seven-point lead. The two teams played fairly even in the final quarter with Crown Point holding on to take the 50-41 win. Lily Dechene and Shannon Farrell were the high scorers for The Orange with 18 and 15 points respectively.

IL/LL: Wilder 0-0-0, Moore 0-0-0, Farrell 7-1-15, Piraino 3-0-6, Hamdan 1-0-2, Carroll 0-0-0, Dechene 8-2-18. Totals 19-3-41.

Crown Point: Ryan 2-0-4, Dushanee 4-0-8, Wolf 8-0-16, Harrington 5-0-10, Foote 5-2-12. Totals 24-2-50.
