The high school basketball schedule last week had the Wells boys and girls teams facing Keene and Chazy, while the Indian Lake / Long Lake boys and girls went up against Elizabethtown. The Lady Orange also opposed Minerva / Newcomb.

WELLS 42, KEENE 35

The slate of games got underway Monday, Dec. 10, with the Wells boys picking up a win in Keene.

The Indians gained a 22-14 first half lead and were never challenged by the host Beavers in the 42-35 victory. Jake Early led Wells, scoring 15 points, while Caleb Hayes contributed 10.

Wells: Early 6-3-15, Hayes 2-6-10, Michenzi 1-2-4, Chicoski 0-4-4, Weaver 1-2-4, Brennan 2-0-2, Hoffman 0-0-0, Elemendorf 0-0-0. Totals: 14-17-42.

Keene: Venner 6-8-20, Warner 3-3-9, Dumas 2-1-5, 0-1-1, Hong 0-0-0, Holmes 0-0-0, Ashe 0-0-0, Haverlick 0-0-0. Totals: 11-13-35.

KEENE 47, WELLS 32

The Wells girls hosted Keene Tuesday evening. The first quarter was competitive with Keene holding a slight four-point lead in the low scoring period. In the second stanza, Keene gained a nine-point advantage by outscoring The Lady Indians 18-9. Wells played tough after the break, but came up short, losing to the 2-0 Beavers 47-32.

Brittany Woodward and Bobbi Jo Page led Wells with 14 and 13 points respectively. Page also recorded eight rebounds and three steals.

The IL/LL girls picked up an easy win over Minerva / Newcomb Tuesday, Dec. 11. The Orange held the host Mountaineers to single digit scoring in all four quarters en route to the 39-12 win. Meg Smith was the high scorer for IL/LL with 19 points, while Shannon Farrell chipped in with 10.

IL/LL: Farrell 5-0-10, King 1-0-2, Bain 1-2-4, Hamdan 2-0-4, Hinckley 0-0-0, Smith 9-1-19, Wilder 0-0-0, Walters 0-0-0, Moore 0-0-0, Seery 0-0-0, Foster 0-0-0. Totals 18-3-39.

CHAZY 63, WELLS 55

Friday evening, Dec. 14, was busy with all four varsity teams in action. Wells hosted Chazy while IL/LL traveled to Elizabethtown. Unfortunately, all four Division III teams suffered a loss.

The Wells boys had a competitive game against Chazy. They played even with The Eagles in the first quarter 8-8. In the second, Chazy held a slight lead at 25-20. The Indians came out strong to start the second half, once again tying Chazy with an 18-18 third quarter. The Eagles pulled away in the last period with a slim 20-17 lead to get the win.

Jake Earley once again led the Wells offense with 27 points. Ben Brennan contributed 20 rebounds and nine points.

The Lady Indians jumped out to an 11-7 lead but couldn’t hold the Eagles at bay in the second half. Chazy outscored Wells in the final two periods 27-8. Brittany Woodward recorded seven points and five steals to pace Wells.

E’TOWN 28, IL/LL 24

In Elizabethtown Friday night the IL/LL girls shot out to a 9-2 first quarter lead and outscored The Lions 7-6 in the second quarter to end the first half up 16-8. After the break, the host Lions edged The Orange 5-4, trailing by seven at the end of three quarters of play.

Elizabethtown took advantage of IL/LL foul trouble in the final quarter, outscoring The Orange 15-4 and capturing the 28-24 win. Jessica Bain led IL/LL with 15 points.

IL/LL: Farrell 2-0-4, King 0-0-0, Darling 1-0-2, Bain 6-3-15, Hamdan 0-0-0, Hinckley 0-0-0, Smith 1-1-3. Totals: 10-4-24.

The IL/LL boys trailed by only five points after eight minutes of play, but couldn’t recover from a 10-2 second quarter and ultimately lost 41-25 to Elizabethtown. Henry Sandiford was the high scorer for IL/LL with nine points.

IL/LL: Moore 2-0-5, Farrell 3-0-7, Sandiford 2-4-9, Seaman 0-0-0, Douglas 0-0-0, Morrissey 0-0-0, Giessen 2-0-4. Totals: 9-4-25.
