Keep trying to quit

Sunday, January 05, 2014 - Updated: 2:52 PM

To the editor,

If you tried to stop smoking in the past and are ready to try again, or if you are a first timer, there are new, free online and mobile services for you to consider.

The following programs are free, easy to use and support tobacco users' efforts to gain control of their lives by quitting smoking.

Becomeanex.com. You may remember this group's humorous TV ads showing people relearning to do routine things, like drinking coffee and driving, without smoking. The "Becomeanex" website helps people develop a plan to stop using tobacco and hosts a supportive, online community of people that are trying to quit.

Teen.smokefree.gov. Most people begin smoking before they are 18, and now there is a website for teens who want to quit. The site has useful information and links to supportive social media: an online Facebook community; Twitter; a mobile app, "QuitSTART;" and a texting service for teens and young adults, Smokefree TXT. (You can also sign up for the TXT on your cell phone: Text QUIT (7848) to IQUIT (47848).

Ucanquit2.org. If you are in the military or a veteran and want to stop smoking, this Department of Defense-sponsored website is designed specifically to meet your needs. This is a very engaging site with great information and a range of services such as: Chat24/7; Train2Quit and a Quit Blog. Services are for service members and veterans enrolled in the VA healthcare system.

NYsmokefree.com is the NY Smokers' Quitline website. In addition to information and support, a person can find out if they are eligible for a free, two-week sample of patches.

Please know it often takes many tries before someone quits tobacco for good. Don't give up on yourself, learn from past experiences and when ready, try again.
