LL merchants rock

Dear Cris,

Long before Long Lake had a Relay For Life team I joined up with a Tupper Lake group. We were Team Thirsty Moose in the June 10 event.

I went to most of the businesses in Long Lake and got them to sign up to support me; if they donated $100 to this they got a poster on the track with their name on it.

I am proud to say most of the posters on the track were for Long Lake businesses from which I collected. Others supported me as well. I collected $1,026. I just wanted to tell how great the businesses were and all the folks here in town.

There were two people who were not ready to give. In fact one told me to put all his friends on my memory candle bag. Ha, buy your own, I told him. Not that I did not want to but it was the point.

The other called me on the phone and bawled me out for telling someone he was so far the only one not to join in.

So thank you all, it was a great success. The group relay collected about $57,000, and all is not in until July 14.

Grateful for needlework

Dear Cris,

Since 2012 is the year-long celebration of the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Town of Lake Pleasant, the Bicentennial Committee has planned some wonderful activities encompassing this accomplishment. There has been town-wide interest and a good show of attendance for all the various events.

One of these activities involved a special group of ladies, behind the scenes, who were busy sewing a memorial quilt to commemorate this historic occasion. They gave of their time, enthusiasm and pride of town to create an historic ‘document’ that will be part of the history of the town from this day forward.

I’d like to publicly thank them for their volunteerism (in alphabetical order) and give them the credit they deserve: Florence Braunius, Connie Danko, Anne Diedrich, Carol Dorr, Sandy Gardner, Nancy Germain, Betty Gibbons, Mary Ann Hughes, Sandy LaVarnway, Brenda MacIntyre, Sherry Matthews, Karen McComb, Cris Meixner, Dorean Page, Nancy Rhodes, Letty Rudes, Sue Swift and Annie Weaver.

These ladies created not one, but two, beautiful quilts. One will be raffled off and one will be donated to the town museum, for all to enjoy for years to come.

You may get your raffle ticket at any bicentennial event, from a Bicentennial Committee member (noted in the blue 200th Anniversary booklet), at Lake Pleasant Historical Museum, the Chamber of Commerce or Speculator Department Store.

Look for the quilt in the Fourth of July Parade.

Happy 200th anniversary to the Town of Lake Pleasant.
