Leave the dog at home

Saturday, July 27, 2013 - Updated: 10:24 PM

Dear Cris,

I was working on Piseco Airport Saturday and watched as the participants of the Wakely Dam Run were coming in. I give those individuals a lot of credit for wanting to punish themselves for 40 miles. Starting out this morning at 6:30 a.m. from Wakely Dam, finishing at Piseco Airport.

But around 4:30 p.m. a man was coming in with an obviously limping dog. I took some biscuits out for the dog, who was exhausted.

As I asked about the dog, I was told he had done this many times and he started out limping, but he was no worse when he got done! The dog was 11 years old!

If a human wants to choose to run that distance, fine. But that dog had no choice. The loyalty of the dog was very evident.

In my opinion no animal should be leashed and made to run for over 11 hours without rest. I hope he was given water. The man had a hydration system on his back.

I would like the sponsor of this marathon or any other marathon to make it a rule that no animals are taken on these runs.

The humans were all celebrating and that is fine, but I can assure you that poor dog was not. He could hardly walk.
