Put new blood on board

Wednesday, October 30, 2013 - Updated: 9:01 AM

Dear Editor:

My criticism of the Long Lake Town Board should not come as a surprise to anyone who reads this newspaper or has an ear to the town rumor mill. Over the years I have openly described the board as jaded, vacant of creativity, absent of leadership, and on the short end of imagination.

Essentially, they have reduced themselves to being once-a-month bill approvers. The incumbents would be hard pressed if asked how their tenure has positively affected the community and its future.

I have personally witnessed unchallenged conflicts of interest and an unwilling and cowardly failure to censure another board member for violation of his oath of office, thereby violating their own; all with impunity.

Now, Long Lakers have a unique opportunity to alter the course of the town's future on Election Day. Two prominent, local businessmen, both deeply rooted in our community, have stepped forward to challenge the status quo and inject new, fresh blood into a stagnant, weary council.

They are prepared to serve the entire township. Clearly, these two men are not among the many who suffer from the false belief that change cannot be effected because others have tried in the past and failed. They should be rewarded with overwhelming support.

Some of us get colds, or perhaps the flu, but we all suffer from the common community condition... contagious apathy... the erroneous idea that there is no sense in trying because others tried and got shot down. The antidote? Positive action!

This election is a unique opportunity to break out, be heard and make things happen. Look for their names on the Independent lines.

Keep this in mind. If the challengers don't make it to the board, much, much time will pass 'afore anyone else will have the courage to step forward. By then, it may well be too late.
