Merger is a win-win

Sunday, December 22, 2013 - Updated: 9:38 PM

Dear Editor,

Having been a resident of the Northville Central School District for over 55 years, attending high school here and graduating, and a taxpayer for 34 years with my children attending and graduating also, I am more than nominally interested in the upcoming merger vote with Mayfield. I see it as a win-win for everyone concerned, taxpayers and students.

I am greatly concerned as to what will happen if we don't merge with Mayfield. I'm not privy to any inside information, but I fear one or more of the following will come to pass if the merger vote fails:

-- the state will step in and merge us with Wells Central School, as Mayfield has already thought about Broadalbin-Perth as its next choice -- that would increase the students' bus ride further than to Mayfield; or

-- as alluded to in other letters, NCS will end up tuitioning our students (high school or all) to Mayfield and we will have no say or control at all as we will have no one on the school board; or,

-- and this I fear the most, the state will step in and set up regional, county-wide high schools and our students will be bussed to Gloversville or Johnstown. Just think of that bus ride!

We know the state wants fewer school districts and will reward those that merge and penalize those that don't. So let us have a say in whom we merge with, so our students get the best education we can offer but with our own choice.

Vote 'yes' Jan. 7 and pay it forward for future generations.
