Police Report -- 02/05/2014

Monday, Jan. 20, 8:45 a.m.: Two people were injured in a two-car accident on Rt. 8/30 in the Village of Speculator, half a mile south of Downey Ave.

Alyssa N. Whetzel, 22, Wells, was northbound operating a 1999 Mercury Sable when she lost control on the slippery road, crossed into the southbound lane and hit an oncoming 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe operated by Dean C. Nervik, 57, Lake Pleasant head-on.

Speculator Volunteer Ambulance Corps took Nervik and his wife, Debbie Nervik, 48, to Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville with neck pain. Whetzel was taken there by Wells Volunteer Ambulance Corps to be evaluated.

The Mercury sedan caught fire, which Speculator Volunteer Fire Department put out. Hamilton County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Kevin Braunius investigated.

Monday, Jan. 20, 2:39 a.m.: Driver Gabrielle Henry, 19, and passenger Claudette Derose, 48, both of Newburgh, were taken to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake with minor injuries following a one-car accident on Rt. 30 near Rice Road in the Town of Long Lake.

State Police say Henry was operating a 2006 Honda Pilot southbound when he fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle left the road, struck guiderails and continued down an embankment into the lake, becoming partially submerged.

Henry was ticketed for imprudent speed and aggravated unlicensed operation. The vehicle was towed by Counter's Garage, Tupper Lake.

Sunday, Jan. 26, 8:25 a.m.: One person was slightly injured in a one-car accident on Algonquin Drive in the Town of Wells, one-tenth of a mile west of the intersection with Rt. 30.

Samantha J. Sherman, 24, Wells, told police she reached down for something. Her 2000 Volkswagen sedan crossed the road and hit a utility pole. She was taken to NLH by private vehicle with a nose injury. Deputy Corey Hutchins ticketed Sherman for failure to keep right and uninspected motor vehicle.

Sunday, Jan. 26, 1:32 p.m.: State Police responded to a burglary in the Town of Wells. The complainant said when he and his wife arrived at their seasonal residence on Rt. 30 they found it had been broken into. State Police confirmed damage and entry and is investigating.

• Timmy K. Billington, 37, Amsterdam, who was injured in a snowmobile accident Jan. 24 on Trail C8, the Perkins Clearing Road in the Town of Lake Pleasant, was still listed in critical condition at Albany Medical Center as of 9:34 a.m. Jan. 31. Billington sustained head, face and chest injuries in the accident. He is not related to the Billingtons of Piseco.
