For the first time in several weeks the weather cooperated last week, allowing area high school basketball teams to play both their scheduled games and some postponed games. The Indian Lake/Long Lake boys played two games, while the IL/LL girls and the Wells boys and girls had a busy week, all playing three games each.

GIRLS

IL/LL 35, CROWN POINT 23

The Lady Orange hosted Crown Point in Long Lake Monday, Jan. 30. IL/LL was looking to avenge its only loss of the season to the Lady Panthers.

The teams were tied at 14 after two periods of play. Then Lady Orange came out strong to break open the game with a 14-2 third quarter, taking a 28-16 lead going into the final period.

Meg Smith led IL/LL with 21 points and eight rebounds. Jesscia Bain contributed four points, six assists and five steals in the victory.

IL/LL outscored Keene 36-6 in the first half on the way to an easy win over Keene in Long Lake Wednesday, Feb. 1. Meg Smith and Jessica Bain led the offense with 11 and 10 points respectively. Shannon Farrell contributed six assists and three steals.

Keene: Kowano 0-0-0, Guerin 1-0-2, Hall 1-0-2, Smith 0-0-0, Jaques 3-1-7, Geiger 1-0-2, Holbrook 2-2-7. Totals 8-3-20.

The Lady Indians were competitive with Crown Point in the first half, trailing by only five points at halftime in a game played in Crown Point Feb. 1. In the third quarter The Panthers shut out Wells 13-0 to seal the win.

Desi Gallup, Karli Tomlinson and Bobbi Jo Page each scored five points for Wells.

Fourteenth-ranked IL/LL traveled to seventh-ranked Westport Friday for their first rematch since IL/LL beat Westport to capture the 2011 Class D Section VII Championship. Both teams had one loss heading into the game.

A strong Westport defense kept The Orange offense in check, limiting IL/LL to seven second-half points.

WELLS 35

Wells hosted Schroon Lake Friday. The Lady Indians trailed by four points at halftime and then tied the game at 28 with a 12-8 third quarter. In the final period Schroon Lake pulled away with a 14-7 quarter to get the win.

Karli Tomlinson was Wells’ high scorer with 12 points, while Macala Vrooman added 10 points and 14 rebounds. Desi Gallup had an all-around good game with eight points, eight rebounds and four steals.

Fifteenth state ranked E’town played Wells Saturday. Wells was able to stay with E’town in the first quarter by a score of 8-7. In the second, The Lions pulled away to take a 26-20 halftime lead. E’town then put forth a strong second half, outscoring Wells 24-6.

Karli Tomlinson led Wells with eight points. Sam Zemken contributed six while Macala Vrooman hauled in eight rebounds.

The Wells boys had a heart-wrenching game Tuesday, Jan. 31, when they hosted Crown Point. With the final second ticking away and Wells leading 41-40, a Crown Point player made a three-point shot at the buzzer to win the game. It was Crown Point’s only lead of the game.

Jake Early led Wells with 18 points, while Seth Weaver added eight.

KING’S SCHOOL 35

The IL/LL boys enjoyed their first victory of the season when they traveled to King’s School Wednesday, Feb. 1. The Orange had to battle down the stretch to obtain the non-league win. King’s School had a four-point lead at halftime, but trailed by two after three periods. The Kings battled in the fourth quarter, outscoring IL/LL 10-9, but couldn’t make up for the earlier deficit.

Colin Farrell was the leading scorer for IL/LL with 14 points. Henry Sandiford added 11.

The IL/LL boys picked up their second win in as many games when they beat Westport Friday. The Orange used a balanced attack with three players scoring in double figures. Colin Farrell led with 14 points, followed by Henry Sandiford’s 12 and Curtis Seaman’s 11.

Undefeated and 14th state ranked Schroon Lake dominated Wells Friday. The Wildcats jumped out to a 22-7 first quarter lead en route to the win. Jake Early netted 24 points for The Indians.

Elizabethtown brought its 11-2 record to Wells Saturday. In spite of Jake Earley’s 21 points and 26 rebounds, E’town took an easy win.
