James John Stephans

James John Stephans, 88, of West Main Street, Indian Lake, died Wednesday evening, February13, 2013, in Andover, CT, at the home of his daughter, Catharina, following a long illness.

Born April 7, 1924, in New York City, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Angela (Troy) Stephans. He was a 1942 graduate of Richmond Hill High School, Queens, and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Columbia University in 1951.

He served as 1st lieutenant in the 14th Air Force of the Army Air Corps during World War II, having flown 16 missions in a P-51 Mustang Fighter Plane in the China Burma India Theater.

He earned the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with three stars and World War II Victory Medal.

James married Ruth Ann Gerken on May 15, 1953, in New York City.

After 20 years of service in the New York City Fire Department, he retired at the rank of Battalion Chief in 1970. James and Ruth moved to Indian Lake permanently in 1991, following spending many summers there with their family.

James was proud to be an Eagle Scout and was a member of 14th Air Force Association Flying Tigers, Uniformed Fire Officers Association, and a       member of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Glens Falls.

He enjoyed playing golf, traveling, all aspects of aviation, studying World War II history and above all, he cherished his family.

Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Ruth Ann Stephans; one daughter, Catharina Bates and her husband, Doug, of Andover, CT; two sons, James W. Stephans and his wife, Cindy, of Cherry Hill, NJ, and Brian C. Stephans of Woodhaven, NY; 17 grandchildren, William Stephans (Shellice), Wendy Wallace (Jason), Wesley Stephans, Cynthia Stephans, Collin Stephans, Lisa Stephans, Kristin Stephans, Brian Stephans Jr., Brandon Stephans, Samantha Bates, Cameron Bates, Olivia Bates, Erika Bates, Alexa Bates, Steven Bates, Julia Bates and Ryan Bates; four great-grandchildren, Gaige, Gavin, Garrett, and Kassandra; one sister, Theresa Mosch of Naples, Fla.; one brother, Charles Stephans of Marco Island, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends called from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at Miller Funeral Home, 6357 state Route 30, Indian Lake.

Funeral services were conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Feb 23, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Paul Wagner of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Glens Falls, officiating.

Spring burial will be in Cedar River Cemetery, Indian Lake.

Douglas David Griffith

Douglas David Griffith, 39, a resident of Speculator, NY went to be with His Lord unexpectedly on Monday February 18, 2013.  

He was born in Flemington, NJ on January 23, 1974. The son of David F. and Carol Ann Nelson Griffith.  

He was a graduate of Delaware Valley Regional High School class of 1992.  He then attended Grove City College and received his BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Messiah College in Grantham, PA.

He was employed as an Engineer for Taylor Made Systems in Gloversville.  He was an active member of the North Country Bible Fellowship Church in Speculator. He was a board member of the Lake Pleasant Sacandaga Association. Through his vacationing, working and volunteering at Camp-of-the-Woods, he developed a love for the Adirondacks where he relocated his family to expand his enjoyment of the area.  

He was a true outdoorsman, loving water skiing, boating, and snowmobiling. He was truly a compassionate man always helping family and friends.

Survivors include his wife; Susan Tesar Griffith of Speculator, whom he married on August 24, 1996. One daughter; Taylor Griffith and one son; Joshua Griffith, both of Speculator. His parents; David and Carol Ann Griffith of Speculator. One sister; Donna and her husband Todd Bosma of Portland, Oregon, as well as their children; Evan and Grace Bosma. In-laws; Thomas and Barbara Tesar of Belle Mead, NJ.  He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of loving friends.    

Friends called on Saturday February 23, 2013 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at the North Country Bible Fellowship Church on Elm Lake Road in Speculator, NY where a celebration of life service was held at 3 p.m.  Burial will be held in the spring.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Camp-of-the-Woods/Gospel Volunteers or to the Benefit Fund for the Wife and Children of Doug Griffith c/o NBT Bank, 2966 New York 30, Speculator, NY 12164.
