The Information Age By Peter Newell Geocaching get-together slated

Sunday, March 09, 2014 - Updated: 11:44 PM

Like the outdoors? Like gadgets? Like games and puzzles? Try geocaching.

Geocaching is like a treasure hunt, but it is high-tech. Instead of using a pirate's map or a secret set of clues to find hidden treasure, you use the coordinates and information listed on a web site like geocaching.com along with a GPS or GPS-enabled smart phone to find geocaches.

You won't find treasure. Instead you'll find some kind of container with a logbook to sign. Depending on the size of the container, there may be interesting items to trade. These could be toys, pocket-size books, costume jewelry, just about any small item.

There are also geocaching-specific items such Travel Bugs and Geocoins. A Travel Bug is a tag attached to an item and tracked on Geocaching.com. It's a hitchhiker people move from cache to cache.

A Geocoin is a special coin created as a kind of signature item or calling card. Like Travel Bugs, each geocoin is assigned a tracking ID that allows it to travel from geocache to geocache or be passed among friends, picking up stories along the way.

Geocaches are rated for difficulty (of finding it once you get there) and terrain (difficulty to get to) on scales of 1-5.

There are also geocaching events where geocachers come to 'meet and greet' and share stories and experiences.

For the last seven years, there's been a Mid-Winter Geocaching Get-Together in Long Lake. This year the organizers took a break, so I got together with a couple of other cachers and set one up for March 15 in Lake Pleasant. You can read about it at prnewell.com/geocaching. To log in to the actual cache page, you'll need to set up a free account on geocaching.com.
