SPECULATOR -- The Village of Speculator Board of Trustees has raised the base rates for both water and sewer service.

The board took the action Monday, April 28, in an effort to close the budget gap between what it costs to provide water and sewer and what users pay for the services.

The base rate for water will increase from $70.55 to $80 per quarter (every three months) and the base rate for sewer will increase from $93.68 to $95. The increases follow a recent audit report on the village's sewer and water funds.

With 412 water users the change will bring in $15,573 more a year for the water fund.

The sewer fund is supported by about 275 users, according to Clerk / Treasurer Bonnie Page, so the additional charge there will bring in about $1,452 more a year.

The new rates went into effect May 1. They will first be reflected on bills received in August.

Use rates were not increased. They were changed last year when the board approved increasing the water use rate by six cents to $5.10 per 1,000 gallons and the sewer use rate by 10 cents, to $8 per 1,000 gallons.

No one on the board is happy to increase fees again. Trustee Robert "Shorty" Hoffman commented, "I hate to do it but we have to do something."

OTHER BUSINESS

-- Johnathan Simard will be hired as temporary full-time summer help at a rate of $12.71 per hour, starting May 12.

-- Only two people have applied for lifeguard positions at the village beach; two more are needed.

The Board of Trustees will next meet Monday, May 12, starting at 7 p.m. in Village Hall.
