Elder Abuse Awareness Day open house will be June 13

Monday, June 02, 2014 - Updated: 11:00 PM

INDIAN LAKE -- The Hamilton County Department of Social Services is commemorating World Elder Abuse Awareness Day by hosting an open house from 1-3 p.m. Friday, June 13, in its Conference Room.

The agency is located at 139 White Birch Lane here. There will be information available about the adult services DSS provides. Refreshments and STOP ELDER ABUSE wristbands will be provided attendees, who are asked to wear purple.

This year's theme is "One person. One action. One Nation. United against elder abuse."

A startling number of elders face abusive conditions. Every year an estimated 5 million, or 1 in 10, older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation.

And that's only part of the picture. Experts believe that for every case of elder abuse or neglect that is reported as many as 23.5 cases go unreported.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day serves as a call to action for individuals, organizations, and communities to raise awareness about abuse, neglect, and exploitation of elders.
