HOPE -- The Hope Town Board has decided the town could benefit from a grant writer.

Town of Benson Supervisor Phil Snyder spoke to the board May 12 about Brian Henry's qualifications to become a grant writer for the towns of Benson and Hope. Henry also spoke, and a discussion followed concerning the need for this position.

It was determined by the Hope Town Board that a grant writer is someone from whom both towns could benefit. The board voted to consider Henry for the position.

Ron Batchard also spoke to the board, concerning the land he and his wife purchased on Route 30 in the Town of Hope bordered by the Sacandaga River. The property has an Adirondack Park Agency permit to build on it and was to be the spot for their retirement home.

This spring water and ice covered the property and the shed and outbuilding they had built were tipped over and moved off their foundation. Batchard asked if anyone has any idea what might have caused this or how it could be averted in the future.

The board said two days of rain combined with thawing of the river ice caused the river to run fast and furious. The Batchards were told the river is known for flooding all the way from Wells to Northville, though not always in the same spot.

OTHER BUSINESS

-- The board voted to contract with Municipal Electric and Gas Alliance (MEGA) for electricity for 36 months at .08991 per kilowatt hour.

-- Town Clerk Marleen Webster reported the town's request for a speed limit change has been mailed to Hamilton County Superintendent of Highways Tracy Eldridge.

-- Councilwoman Dianna Downing said there is an issue with people letting their dogs of out their vehicles when they come to the recycling center. The board decided to have signs posted reading, "Please Keep Your Dogs in Your Vehicles."
