Lions serve at Community Connections

LONG LAKE -- The local Lions Club lived up to its "We Serve" motto literally during Community Connections at Long Lake Central School.

The club provided most of the food and cooked the meal for the community Thursday, May 15.

Since Lions is the only service club organization in the small hamlet of Long Lake, its 19 members keep extraordinarily busy either planning projects or carrying them out. The club earns money by selling calendars with photographs from the area with local birthdays and anniversaries listed, by serving food at summer events and by sponsoring vintage snowmobile races.

The Lions' mission statement is "To empower volunteers to serve their community" by helping children, students, seniors and the entire community.

The Lions use the proceeds from its events to purchase eye exams and glasses and seeds for the community garden, and to help seniors with heating costs (which were extremely high during the past very cold winter).

In addition, the Lions donate money to the school's Electrathon Car Club and help sponsor an educational field trip for students pursuing careers as health professionals.
