Stofelano will not join school board

Monday, June 02, 2014 - Updated: 5:32 PM

WELLS -- Stephen A. Stofelano Jr. was elected to the Wells Central School District Board of Education May 20, but will not be taking his seat for more than a few minutes.

That's because he was hired by the BOE the very next day to be the school's business and distributive education teacher. He would have joined the board July 1, but now will join only to resign.

Stofelano holds a master's degree in education and ran his own business in Albany for 27 years. He is certified to teach grades K-12.

The teaching appointment takes effect Sept. 1. There is a two-year probationary period.

The move means the five-year seat Stofelano ran for and won will be empty until the next election in the spring of 2015, unless the BOE appoints someone to fill it or holds a special election. Stofelano was the only candidate this year.

Superintendent Thomas Sincavage told the BOE Wednesday, May 21, that WCS has been approached by an engineering firm whose representative is working on obtaining funding for a proposed county-operated central fueling station in the Town of Wells.

This would presumably be Phase IV of the Hamilton County Fuel Management Consolidation Project. The BOE members were given information to review in advance of the June meeting, when a resolution may be presented in support of the project.

Municipality and school district support is necessary to move forward with a grant application for the majority of the funding for the fueling station, as well as removal of unnecessary fuel tanks.

-- The school has been informed it can confidently plan on paying for just $200,000 of the $942,800 building project.

-- Mark Ellis was appointed as clerk of the works for the upcoming building project. He will be paid $9,980.
