LAKE PLEASANT -- "No one knew [a water line] was there," Lake Pleasant Superintendent of Highways Randy La Varnway said June 16 when he told the Lake Pleasant Town Board about a water leak on Page St.

La Varnway said the leak came from a water line coming from Moffitt's Beach Public Campground that was buried within the right-of-way of the town road. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has turned off the line and will repair it, he added.

He also said no one from the DEC could remember when the line was installed and there are no maps showing its location.

Although the state owns the land, the town has a ROW and should have been advised when the line was installed.

According to the DEC, development of the campground began in 1932. In 1933 the Civilian Conservation Corps was established, and worked on the campground until 1942.

Until the late 1950s there were approximately 100 campsites. In 1955 the Village of Speculator requested that the Conservation Department enlarge the campground. This was accomplished shortly thereafter, doubling the size.

Supervisor Neil McGovern said the town remains committed to assisting the Village of Speculator with moving and setting up the collection of small buildings called "Route 66" being offered as a donation to the village by John VanBuiten of South Shore Rd.

But, said McGovern, "The village board needs to decide where the buildings will be placed. We will help them when and if they decide what they want to do."

VanBuiten's Route 66 collection can be seen online at

There was some discussion about what to do if the village fails to accept the donation. Members tried but failed to come up with a piece of town property that would be a suitable location accessible to the public.

The Lake Pleasant Town Board will next meet Monday, July 7, starting at 7 p.m. in Town Hall.
