SPECULATOR - The Village of Speculator Board of Trustees unanimously agrees lifeguards are not supposed to be babysitters.

When the board met Monday, July 22, there was some discussion about what the lifeguards should do when they discover children at the beach without their parents or another guardian being present.

It didn't take long for the board to agree that in such a situation the lifeguards should notify the county sheriff.

In a related matter, the board accepted the resignation of substitute lifeguard Matthew Michienzi, who has found a position that pays better in Wells.

Mayor Letty Rudes said she believes the four remaining lifeguards can adequately staff the beach and believes it will remain open through Labor Day.

Superintendent of Highways Roger Blanchard reported his department has been busy mowing, cutting brush and collecting garbage.

The department has also replaced all five of the village toilets around the village with new ones and is replacing old "Children at Play" signs with new signs, with six going up on Elm Lake Road.

Blanchard also reported the department had to fish a picnic table out of the lake at Osborne Point.

"There has also been some vandalism on Sacandaga Pathway," said Blanchard, "and a flower planter was recently destroyed during the night by an unknown vehicle near King of the Frostys."

The Board of Trustees will next meet Monday, Aug. 12, starting at 7 p.m. in Village Hall.
