On October 7, 1967 she married Ensign James H. Bateman at the Naval Air Station, Brunswick, Georgia.

During their twenty-five years of active service together, Sam was the consummate Navy wife, active in every aspect of service, both afloat and ashore. Her love of the hospitality industry later led to becoming the manager of the Navy Officers Club, Dam Neck, Virginia in the late 1980s.

Her obvious love of gardening was apparent to anyone passing by her Long Lake home. Sam was an avid crafter and a member of the Northern Needles Quilters group. She was an active supporter of Long Lake American Legion Post 650 and its community projects. In response to a perceived need, she assumed responsibility for creating and maintaining the Long Lake Medical Center’s flowerbeds and decorations.
