LAKE PLEASANT -- Expect a temporary closure of County Route 11, South Shore Road, in the Town of Lake Pleasant sometime in August.

Hamilton County Superintendent of Highways Tracy Eldridge reported to county supervisors during committee meetings Monday, July 28, that he would be placing an ad in this newspaper to inform residents and businesses of the closure.

It could take up to a week to replace a culvert there, he said. This is part of work planned on the road that includes improving ditches, replacing culverts, grinding and adding base and paving at an estimated cost of $130,000.

The road has two ways in and out, so it will still be able to be used on either side of the culvert repair site.

Bids were opened on two other highway projects.

Town & County Bridge and Rail, Albany, was the only bidder interested in installing box beam guide rail on County Route 16, Gilmantown Road. The firm bid $8,774.

Tioga Construction Co. Inc., Utica, submitted the only bid to build bridge abutments on the Beaver Brook Bridge on County Route 18, Chamberlain Road, Indian Lake. The bid is $71,000.

Both bids will be reviewed. Action may be taken when the Board of Supervisors meets Aug. 7.

Eldridge updated the supervisors on a range of topics. He said all road projects throughout the county are proceeding satisfactorily, recycling is going well at the transfer stations and a lot of paper is being brought in, and striping of the county parking lots in Indian Lake and Lake Pleasant will take place sometime in August.

Tish Biesemeyer of Burnham Financial, Lake Placid, and Bonnie Rosen, a sales representative with Excellus Medicare Group, provided the supervisors with an update on health insurance.

Changes in costs and coverage for 2015 are expected due to requirements of the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare. The costs of Medicare Advantage plans are expected to increase as much as 25 percent due to the changes.

Comparing the cost of current Medicare Advantage plans offered by MVP and Excellus shows a $60 savings per month per employee could be had by switching from MVP to Excellus. The current MVP rate is $293.80 per month and the current rate for Excellus is $233.03.

The supervisors will also need to compare costs for HMO plans offered by MVP and Excellus Blue Cross / Blue Shield.

Figures are yet to be known, but Biesemeyer and Rosen are planning to meet with the supervisors again sometime in September.
