CROP walk is Sept. 14

WELLS -- A walk to raise money for impoverished hungry people around the world is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 14.

CROP is an acronym for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. It is part of Church World Service that sponsors such walks all around the United States.

The churches in Wells, Speculator, Lake Pleasant, and Piseco host this particular walk. Walking symbolizes the miles people in many poorer countries must walk to reach clean water and food.

The walk will be held in Wells starting and ending at Wells United Methodist Church on Main Street. Those who are able will walk around Lake Algonquin (3.5 miles) but shorter distances can be walked.

Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the church with the walk starting at 2 p.m. There will be water and rest stops along the route with refreshments at the church following the walk.

Walkers should sign up sponsors and can receive donation envelopes at any of the sponsoring churches. Twenty-five percent of the funds raised are returned to food pantries in the area, with the rest used to support self-help development programs, meet emergency needs, and help address the root causes of poverty around the world.
