Just clarifying

Saturday, August 16, 2014 - Updated: 9:41 PM

Dear Editor,

Once again I've been bombarded with questions: "How long have you been here?" "What do you do?" "Where is the garden?" "What do you take?" followed by "What are your needs?"

In response we have been here in Indian Lake for nearly 40 years. Community Action is here to help residents within Hamilton County, who are facing a hardship.

Our food pantry and emergency services are based upon income guidelines and according to funds available. We also offer lightly used clothing, household items, games, toys, books, bedding, and larger pieces of furniture based upon availability.

During certain times of the year we offer school supplies, Christmas gifts and other goodies, Thanksgiving fixings, birthday gifts, new baby items, and vegetable seeds.

As for the Indian Lake Community Garden, it is on Benton Road next to the cemetery. Individuals work their own plots and we take care of the "Pantry Garden" of which all produce goes to the pantry.

We will take pretty much anything as long as it is still useable. At this time we are in dire need of school supplies; we have exceeded our numbers for last year and expect another 30 or more children. We are always in need of toiletries, feminine products, soup, tuna, children's toys, clothing, shoes, and new underwear.

Though we fall under Warren-Hamilton Counties Community Action Agency we do not receive any county, state, or federal funding for the programs we offer Hamilton County residents. Everything we receive, from food, clothing, and daily necessities to funding, are a result of donations.

These donations come from generous individuals, churches, organizations, and grant opportunities.

Please consider donating to Community Action before you dispose of an item that may be useful to another. We are located at 6309 NYS Rt. 28/30 (West Main Street) in Indian Lake.
