Being a ham is fun

Saturday, August 16, 2014 - Updated: 9:43 PM

Dear Editor,

As Northern New York section emergency coordinator for the Amateur Radio Emergency Service, I would like to thank the members of the Hamilton County and Tryon Amateur radio clubs who provided communications during the Piseco Triathlon.

Radio operators were stationed around the course to provide real-time tracking and report problems should any occur. Fortunately the event went smoothly.

Participating in these events not only enhances their safety and smooth operation, it is excellent training for actual emergency operations.

Hams can communicate totally independent of any infrastructure such as commercial power, telephone lines, or cell towers, which can and do fail. To simulate such conditions, the triathlon communications were conducted on a 'simplex' frequency rather than using the local repeater.

Aside from the emergency preparedness benefits, ham radio is a lot of fun and can be a very educational hobby. Obtaining a license requires some study but is not difficult. A class and test session is usually scheduled every October in Long Lake.
