Hamlets 3 has project ideas from hotel to a public beach

Thursday, September 12, 2013 - Updated: 9:50 PM

LONG LAKE - An Adirondack Museum Hotel in Blue Mountain Lake?

Improvements to Jennings Park Pond here, including development at the site of the current Long Lake Highway Garage?

Extending the "T" intersection in downtown Indian Lake north into a cross roads and a possible housing development and a new Adirondack Lake public beach?

What's going on? Hamlets 3.

The hamlets of Indian Lake, Blue Mt. Lake and Long Lake will participate in Phase 2 of the Hamlets 3 Workshops Friday, Sept. 27, and Saturday, Sept. 28.

Public presentations will be held in each of the three communities, outlining Adirondack smart growth planning principles with specific references to projects within each community.

Roger Trancik and Bill Johnston of Urban Design Consultants, Ithaca, who did the study that resulted in Hamlets 3, will lead the workshops. Hamlets 3 is a grant-funded pilot effort to look at planning in hamlets. Communities with a serious, well-considered plan have a better chance of getting funds for projects.

The plans will be presented for community discussion and feedback as follows. All meetings are open to the public.

Friday, Sept. 27, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Indian Lake Town Hall, Indian Lake.

Friday, Sept. 27, 3-6 p.m. at Adirondack Museum, Blue Mountain Lake.

Saturday, Sept. 28, 9 a.m. to noon at Long Lake Central School, Long Lake.

Display panels and a workshop agenda will engage community participants in these hands-on sessions. Workshop activities will include question and response interaction, idea sketching and choosing among alternatives.

The feedback and suggestions will be recorded and incorporated into the final document for the project to be posted on line.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation provided funds for the Hamlets 3 project through its Smart Growth Initiative.
