LAKE PLEASANT - The Hamilton County Public Health Nursing Service has been shorthanded at the top, with Beth Ryan serving as both director of public health and director of nursing services with assistance from Jill Bara.

With Bara scheduled to leave at the end of the year, the county Board of Supervisors has concluded its search for a director of public health. The supervisors agreed Wednesday, Oct. 16, to hire Dr. Irina Gelman, a Brooklyn podiatrist, effective Jan. 2, 2014 at a salary of $80,000.

The appointment is conditional; the NYS Department of Health will work directly with Gelman to determine the conditions of her appointment.

EMT CLASSES

In another health-related matter, Emergency Medical Services Coordinator Gary Wickes updated the supervisors on the status of the EMT classes in Speculator and Blue Mt. Lake.

Wickes said 28 new and re-certifying students are taking the classes in Blue Mt. Lake and 15 are taking them in Speculator.

"So far we haven't lost any of the students who started the classes and everyone is doing well," Wickes said.

The classes, held two nights a week, began in early September and will continue until mid-March, when the final practical skills and written exams will be given.

BROADBAND

The board created a Hamilton County Broadband Phase I Project Account to be funded with $472,000. It will be totally offset by creating and funding a State Aid Revenue Account of $472,000.

The $472,000 is a grant received from Empire State Development.

Hamilton County Treasurer Beth Hunt was authorized to pay Frontier Communications for its Phase 1 work on the Hamilton County Broadband Project.

Phase 1 is increasing Internet speeds for users within a two-mile radius of main switches. Phase II will extend coverage to most outlying areas between Piseco and Long Lake and west through Raquette Lake and Inlet.
