Shine a Light on Lung Cancer vigil returns

Thursday, October 31, 2013 - Updated: 9:02 PM

INLET - The second annual "Shine a Light on Lung Cancer" vigil here will be Thursday, Nov. 14, starting at 7 p.m. in the senior room at Inlet Town Hall.

Vigils will be held throughout the United States and in many countries around the world. Last year's vigil was well attended and honored the lives of 24 friends and relatives who died as a result of lung cancer.

Plans for this year include honoring these same 24 individuals and any others either suffering from the disease or having passed away from it. To add a loved one, friend, relative to the list contact Adele Burnett at (315) 357-5501 or e-mail the addition to

It was especially edifying when, a short time after last year's vigils, the U.S. Congress passed a bill making lung cancer research a priority. Before then, research into this killer received a very small percentage of cancer funding, although lung is one of the most deadly forms of cancer.

This year's vigil will follow basically the same format, including an opening prayer, a welcome and a medical expert's take on progress in lung cancer treatment. Bring photos or photo boards for display.

A new wrinkle this year will be the lighting of a sky lantern in memory of each person. Refreshments and time for camaraderie will follow.
