LONG LAKE -- DH Communications, Long Lake's local cable television provider, discontinued servicing the hamlet of Long Lake last winter.

Hope for a new provider was in the air when Phil Wagschal, president and general manager of St. Lawrence Internet Connections (SLIC) Network Solutions, came before the Long Lake Town Board Tuesday, Nov. 26, with an offer that could provide more and better cable TV as early as next summer.

SLIC expects to complete a fiber-optic broadband connection from Tupper Lake to Long Lake in the near future, which will make speeds of up to 100 megabits per second available.

According to Wagschal, the high-speed cable for broadband will make it possible for SLIC to provide cable TV service.

What is next needed is a cable TV franchise agreement between the town and SLIC. Wagschal provided the board with the paperwork to start the process, including a resolution it would have to approve before SLIC can apply to the Federal Communications Commission for a license to provide the service here.

The first step for the town is to have the paperwork, franchise agreement and resolution reviewed by the attorney for the town. Once they are deemed acceptable the town board would vote on the matter, perhaps as soon as its next meeting Monday, Dec. 23, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall.
