Irene D. Gray

November 29, 2012

Irene D. Gray, 87, passed away on November 29, 2012 at the Horace Nye Home in Elizabethtown, NY. Irene had been a resident of the Greenwood Apts. in Lake Placid before moving to Horace Nye in Sept. 2008.

Born on May 22, 1925 in Schenectady, NY to Leo and Nora Hinch, Irene graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in Schenectady. She and her      husband, Edward F. Gray were married Aug. 7, 1948 at St. Columba’s Church in Schenectady. Irene worked as a secretary at the Scotia Naval Depot and G.E. prior to motherhood and was a homemaker thereafter.

Upon Ed’s retirement, Irene and Ed moved to Wells, NY where she became very active in local organizations. She was a past president of the St. Ann’s Altar Society, a member of the Wells Improvement Group and a long time president of the Well’s Senior Citizens Club. She and Ed were named Hamilton County Senior Citizens of the Year in 1991. She enjoyed gardening, and feeding the deer, wild turkeys and birds that visited their home. They moved to Lake Placid in fall of 2006.

Irene was predeceased by her parents, her husband Ed in Nov. 2011, her son Michael in 1998, and her brother Harold in 1990.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna Gray of Lake Placid, Michael’s two sons: Brad Smith of West Haven, UT and Conor Gray of Steamboat Springs, CO, her niece Linda (Luke) Mayer of Alexandria, VA and nephew David Hinch of Rockville, MD, and her wonderful adoptive family – the caring staff at the Horace Nye Home in Elizabethtown. She had a smile for everyone; Alzheimer’s couldn’t rob her of that.

Irene had made arrangements 20 yrs ago with the Anatomical Gift Program of Albany Medical College, and her wish is fulfilled

Friends wishing to remember Irene may do so by making contributions to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eight Ave., 7th fl., New York, NY 10001, or Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 107, Lake Placid, NY 12946, or a charity of their choice.
